As it stands PSY isn’t my favorite artist, and to use a token phrase of mine, to be quite honest, I really don’t care about his stuff at all. However, it doesn’t mean I’m super-fucking-glad-as-fuck this guy’s getting the recognition he deserves. Before Gangnam Style, PSY was doing the same thing, but just hadn’t gotten his big-big break yet and understandably so; thousands upon thousands of videos get uploaded to YouTube every SECOND, so it’s not uncommon for things to take a while to catch on. Now being someone who has an anime/videogame YouTube channel and wants to get subscribers in the 5-figures range, I can say, “respek” with conviction when I see someone like PSY get a break.
Yesterday (April 13), the flashy Korean artist dropped a song called, “Gentleman” and apparently it got over 10 million views in under 24 hours. Not too long ago I had a hard time getting barely 100 views in 24 hours, so imagine my wtf-ness when I read about it. But upon a calm step back, I realize not everyone shares my sentiment and some people hate on the fact Gangnam Style propelled him to a point which realistically, NO other song can top. Ever. In the world. It’s crazy…his hip-thrusting song has over a BILLION views. It’s a big deal when something hits 1-million, a REALLY big deal when a video hits over 100 million, but a billion? The bar’s so high now it’s probably impossible PSY himself could reach it (about 1.5 billion views) again.
So like the title touches on, there’s always gonna be haters, but some of the hoopla over this video is ridiculous. I won’t actually read some of the comments, but feel free to check YouTube or other articles covering this. Naturally, one-hit wonders are typically resigned to nothingness after a hit, but PSY’s accrued such a fan base until it seems even if he made a song about his (imaginary) love for meth and bath salts, it’d garner a few million views if not more. And don’t get me wrong, I love bath salts as much as the next guy, but what’s wrong with PSY monopolizing on his past success? I mean we all do it all the time when we brag about a job we do or a bullet point on our resume…so how is his situation any different from ours?
No, it’s not another Gangnam Style and all the 6 O’Clock newscasts who’ve nothing to cover need to get the fuck out. But the new song does seem interesting in its own right.
