Anime’s “Virginity Complex” & Japan’s Reality

Japan is (only kind of) fucking weird. Start typing “why is ‘j’” in google, and “why is japan weird” is the first suggestion; not “why is jello usually red?” or “why is Jennifer Lopez a terrible actor?” In many respects, I think it’s a bit unfair to label Japan “weird” in relation to sex…but not look at other countries’ incompetency to curb something important like murder rate. In fact, PRWeb contrasts one of the safest US cities to Japan’s most dangerous prefecture (respectively) noting`, “two murders for every 100,000 and twenty rapes for every 100,000. Right away you can see the contrast with Osaka Prefecture, with .79 murders and .1 rapes per 100,000.” Clearly, Japan must be doing something right…but what about sex?

If you’ve watched your fair share of anime even for a year, you’d know anime (and hentai especially) is OBSESSED with virginity. So much so, Islamic terrorist propaganda can’t hold a candle to how many virgins anime/hentai produce a season. Now I love anime dearly, but ever so frequently I’m starting to find more elements of this medium that (frankly) irritate me. I’m well aware anime is in no way a (complete) reflection of reality or current times, but it doesn’t mean peddling certain kinds of ridiculousness. In relation to this “virgin complex,” we’ll talk about sexual attitudes and bottom-line trends.

Japanese Male & Female Sexual Views

Did you know Japan has an official group for virgins? They do. It’s dubbed, The Japan Cherry Boy Association & supposedly, the founder, Shin Watanabe claims 10%-25% of Japanese men ages 18-40 are virgins. Various studies and surveys affirm this. The club essentially serves as a literal jumpoff for people trying to get laid, hoping a couple of bored/lonely/horny girls scour the site alongside being a support group for those who haven’t ‘gotten any’ yet. Okay, so a lot of awkward, sex-deprived guys. How surprising. I mean horny guys are everywhere, so I’m not shocked to hear it (although, surprisingly, US stats aren’t far either). Mind you, Nippon isn’t any different to other places when it comes to guys trying to have sex, despite stats. They hold a universal ideal just like everyone else: try to get rid of the v-card as soon as possible.

Girls on the other hand are a bit more complicated. Oh, and I’m not an expert, so take what I say in stride, but I’ve tried to do as much research as I could. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any concrete surveys/studies about female virginity in Japan, but the attitude towards sex from society’s thoughts on woman who engage in sex or think about seem to be more “stable” and open than western attitudes. Purity isn’t such a mainstay compared to innocence and social standards. In simpler terms, girls aren’t frowned upon (for the most part) for having sex & aren’t as “wishy-washy.” Simplified even further: if they do it, they do it. I would make more related assertions, but unfortunately I don’t have the data.

Sex Within The Social Dynamic

Contrary to popular belief, it isn’t expected for either party to be a virgin before marriage. Again, I’m not saying some families/areas disagree, but as you may have guessed, the sexual atmosphere is much more relaxed, relatively speaking. No doubt you’ve seen a clip of a game show once or twice…yeah, I won’t go there today, but will say it’s not uncommon for people to read pornography in public. Sex is seen as an “urge” that needs to be released in some form or fashion to relieve stress. Besides gun laws, strict immigration rules, and upbringing, this probably accounts for why Japan has an incredibly low global crime rate.

But, moving on, one thing paralleling hentai is the disdain for condoms. Birth control and condoms are sometimes used, but not the first topic of discussion when getting down & dirty. For lack of a more tactful term, “raw” is the normal and preferred way to go. And rightly so, as general STD reception is fairly low. However, the most interesting paradoxical fact is “[How Japan is] the least sexually active country. Supposedly, the Japanese only have sex 36 times a year on average, compared to the overall world average of 97 times a year.”

After couples marry, many claim the relationship isn’t seen in such physical way anymore, they are exhausted from work, or flat out…have other “much more fun” things to do. All I know is my feelings would be hurt if my girl thought doing a crossword puzzle was more fun. Actually, I think I’d kill myself. On the flip-side, the couples who supposedly do want to ‘throw down’ can’t because the walls are much too thin & living space far too limited. All aforesaid reasons seem fairly valid, though I’m a bit sad-face to read such things. These explanations most likely stem from the youth who are particularly indifferent about doing the hokey-pokey. The Japanese Association for Sex Education Research Journal notes more than 1/3 of its male & female teenage participants (SUPPOSEDLY) didn’t care too much about trying to zooma zooma zoom zoom — which is perfectly fine.

Separation of Media & Real Life

As mentioned before, anime isn’t supposed to be the mirrored reflection of real life, but rather a window of escape. Even so, things can get confusing every now and then so it’s always good to know in spite of what we see everyday or perhaps every other week, that media in general shouldn’t be the primary force we compare ourselves to, but a complement to our imagination. And for all I know, that last line might be completely wrong…but what I do know? I’ll never look at the company, “Virgin” Airlines the same again >_> (APA bibliography/sources)
